Character select is faster now, you can make playlists for your band as expected, and the whole thing feels very streamlined and straightforward. This is a big selling point for me specifically, since this is more of a quick, "get in, get out" offering where players can shove this disc in for a few songs, and then go right back to World Tour or Metallica. In quick play, all songs are now available right from the offset, so no more screwing around with codes to unlock everything or taking time to run through career mode. It's all about performance and star reward. Play all of them just decently, and you may also have enough stars to unlock the next tier. The career mode embraces a tiered system making use of stars, so if you play a few songs extremely well you can unlock the next tier. In addition the entire package has been changed up once again in order to keep things very party-centric and straightforward. It's a simple change that follows suit with Metallica's offering as well, but it's a nice change for sure. Beenox worked with every version this time around, and as part of their contribution to the Guitar Hero legacy they've revamped the in-game HUD slightly, as it's now easier to tell exactly who is doing well, how much star power you have, and the current state of the entire band. What it comes down to with Smash Hits is local play, and it's a stronger offering than World Tour's core experience overall. If you bought games on Metallica or World Tour, they work only with their own version something that Activision needs to fix if they want to compete in the virtual world of gaming.īut if you've been following Guitar Hero over the last few iterations, you already know that. Smash Hits is its own experience, and DLC will come in the form of GH Tunes (which are cross-compatible) with no actual pay-based DLC. What won't work, sadly, is downloadable content from every other game. As you'd expect, everything from previous Guitar Hero games still works on Smash Hits – hardware wise at least – so all your guitars, drum kits, and double bass drum pedals work for specific songs in "expert +" drum mode. In fact, we had a chance to finally go hands-on with Nintendo's version of Smash Hits a few days ago, and it's as good as the other offerings across 360 and PS3 undeniably.
